Hajj

18 Days

Hajj (حجّ) is the Islamic pilgrimage to the holy city of Makkah (Mecca) in Saudi Arabia. It is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, and every Muslim who is physically and financially able is required to perform it at least once in their lifetime.

🕋 Purpose and Spiritual Meaning

The purpose of Hajj is to:

Demonstrate submission to Allah (God).

Promote unity, humility, and equality among Muslims.

Cleanse oneself spiritually from sins — symbolizing a fresh start.

Commemorate the trials and devotion of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham), his wife Hajar (Hagar), and their son Isma’il (Ishmael).

📅 When Is Hajj Performed?

Hajj takes place annually during the Islamic month of Dhul-Hijjah, specifically from the 8th to the 12th (or sometimes 13th) of that month.

📍 Main Rituals of Hajj

Ihram (إحرام)

Pilgrims enter a sacred state by wearing special garments:

Men: two white unstitched sheets

Women: modest clothing without adornment

Pilgrims recite the Talbiyah:
“Labbayka Allahumma Labbayk…”
(“Here I am, O Allah, here I am.”)

Tawaf (طواف)

Circling the Kaaba seven times counterclockwise.

Sa’i (سعي)

Walking seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwah, reenacting Hajar’s search for water.

Standing at Arafat (Wuquf at Arafat / وقوف عرفات)

The most important ritual.
Pilgrims spend the afternoon praying and seeking forgiveness at Mount Arafat, symbolizing the Day of Judgment.

Muzdalifah

After sunset, pilgrims travel to Muzdalifah to pray and collect small pebbles for the next day’s ritual.

Ramy al-Jamarat (Stoning of the Devil)

Pilgrims throw pebbles at three stone pillars in Mina, symbolizing the rejection of evil (as Prophet Ibrahim did).

Animal Sacrifice (Qurbani / قرباني)

Commemorating Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son; meat is shared with the poor.

Tawaf al-Ifadah & Tawaf al-Wada (Farewell Tawaf)

Pilgrims return to the Kaaba for additional circumambulations before leaving Makkah.
